33 Mehetabel Road: Joyce
Objects that have sustained me during lockdown:
Joyce: VE Day decorations. This road is amazing, but I’m disappointed there is no VE Day party today. It makes me quite sad. Perhaps we’ll have a party when all this is over.
We came here in 1941, during the war. I was evacuated, of course, but mum was here. You weren’t cooped up then even if it was dangerous. For nine weeks I’ve not been further than my doorstep. I keep threatening to, but Selina, next door, tells me I mustn’t.
I’ve had so much support from people in this road, but I choose where they go shopping. Donna is a vegetarian, so I ask someone else if I want a nice lamb steak. Selina gives me Sunday lunch. Today she asked, “Would you like a barbecue later?” “But its Saturday” I replied. My brother, who’s 84, keeps asking, “Why don’t you sell the house and live down here?” He lives down Malden, where I have a caravan. I asked him, “How many people have knocked on your door?” “Not one,” he replied. Selina told me, “You’d be crazy to move. You’ve got Tesco, Marks and a hospital around the corner… and a garden”. Someone just needs to say it really.
